N. Louise Young was the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in Maryland. She earned her medical degree from Howard University School of Medicine in 1930, and two years later she opened her first practice in the offices above her father’s drug store on Druid Hill Avenue.
Dr. Young was an outspoken advocate for female physicians and sex education, and was the only African American to receive training at the Baltimore Birth Control Clinic. In 1940, Young was granted a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Provident Hospital, later serving as chief of the department from 1950 to 1963. She retired in 1984 after 52 years of practicing medicine.
Today we put a spotlight on Dr. Young and her contributions to Black history in honor of
#BlackHistoryMonth.
