Today during #BlackHistoryMonth we are highlighting an image representing Black joy, excellence, and resilience within our collection. The Honorable Thurgood Marshall of Baltimore, Maryland argued over 30 landmark cases before the U.S. Supreme Court between 1936-1961. The most recognized cases that the Justice argued were Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, KS; Sweat v. Painter; McLaurin v. Oklahoma Board of Regents of Higher Education; and Gibbs v. Board of Education of Montgomery County, MD. Judge Marshall was known as “Mr. Civil Rights” because of his tireless and lifelong fight for social justice and rights for African Americans. This Black History Month, MCHC is celebrating the past and future of Black excellence, success, and resilience in Maryland! Image: Portrait of Thurgood Marshall, unknown photographer, 1967.
