The Maryland Center for History and Culture stands with Ukraine and Marylanders of Ukrainian descent. Ukrainians have shaped Maryland's story in many ways represented in the MCHC collection—most significantly within the largest group of works by the artist Jacob Glushakow (1914-2000) inclusive of over 50 paintings and 1,000 drawings. Glushakow was a Baltimore artist who was born on the steamship Brandenburg as it crossed the Atlantic from Bremen to Baltimore. His Jewish family was fleeing persecution in Ukraine at the onset of World War I.
Glushakow grew up in East Baltimore. Inspiration from the area’s large Ukrainian community is seen throughout his work capturing commonplace scenes of urban life. MCHC is grateful to steward Glushakow’s legacy entrusted to us by his family. His works and life story are a window into a changing Baltimore and convey a resilient and perceptive tradition during this trying time for Ukraine and the world.
