In recognition of International Workers Day today, we take a look back at these garment workers sewing clothing by hand for the Henry Sonneborn and Company in Baltimore. As the nation's largest clothing factory, it turned out 3,000 men's suits a day. The company was founded by Henry Sonneborn (1826-1917), a German immigrant who arrived in the United States at age 22. The nine-story factory was constructed in 1905 on the northwest corner of Pratt and Paca Streets in downtown Baltimore, and was designed by architects Otto Simonson and Theodore W. Pietsch. The University of Maryland Medical System (ummedsystem) occupies the building today. Image: Sonneborn Factory Interior, photograph by the Hughes Company, c.1905-1915.
