In 2021, Virginia became the first Southern state to legalize marijuana. This policy change allowed for adults aged 21 and up to possess and cultivate the drug. Home cultivation, adult sharing, and medicinal use of the drug are legal, as well. Fast-forward to the Virginia 2024 General Assembly. The Senate and House of Delegates passed companion bills allowing recreational marijuana sales to begin in the commonwealth in 2025. Under Senate Bill 448 and House Bill 698, the state would start taking applications for cultivating, processing, testing, and selling cannabis on Sept. 1.
