Castlewood Canyon State Park is home to a piece of Colorado history that went terribly wrong. The park encompasses the remains of the Castlewood Canyon Dam, built in 1890. In 1933, after heavy rains, the dam suffered a complete collapse. A 15-foot wall of water surged down Cherry Creek all the way to Denver, about 15 miles away. Luckily, warnings reached the city by 4 am, allowing most people to evacuate before the flood hit.
