Earthset. 🌎 The Orion spacecraft captured this image of Earth “setting” while the spacecraft continued toward its distant retrograde orbit around the Moon. In this image from nearly 270,000 miles (430,000 km) away from Earth, Orion is traveling around the far side of the Moon and will soon surpass Apollo 13’s record-setting distance from Earth in a spacecraft designed to carry astronauts. Although this is our return to the Moon, our goals have changed since the Apollo missions a half-century ago. Future Artemis missions will land humans upon the lunar surface again—this time to stay. The Moon will serve as a testing ground to prepare technology and practice techniques for future crewed missions to Mars. Artemis I is the first step in this process. During its journey around the Moon and back to Earth, Orion is recording data that will aid in establishing a sustainable presence on the lunar surface.
