That’s enough slices!
This jumbo sky pie was brought to you by TESS—our Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite operated by MIT—in an effort to discover distant exoplanets, or planets outside our solar system.
TESS completed its primary mission in 2020 by imaging 75% of our night sky over two years. In that time, it found 66 new exoplanets and nearly 2,100 exoplanet candidates.

Starting at 5 o'clock and proceeding counterclockwise, segments of the southern night sky fan out to create a circular mosaic, revealing a deep, dark blue sprinkled with numerous tiny, white stars. The image is dappled with white flecks of larger celestial bodies, and the Milky Way galaxy appears as a glowing line down the center of the image, curving slightly to the left between the 12 to 6 o'clock positions. Pitch black lines denote seams between the slices of sky.
