Between our 6 digit student loans and a credit card we had over 110k of debt. When we sold our house in 2018, we put 30k towards our student loans. The other 80k we paid off by cancelling subscriptions, limiting spending, throwing all extra money at debt, and sticking to a written, zero-based budget. This journey all started when I stumbled upon a Dave Ramsey Show episode and Dave was interviewing a family who was in their 30’s with 4 kids and they paid off all their debt including their house. What?! I’d never heard of such a thing—I was intrigued.
