“I grew up in a magical place called Harlem. A place where American giants shaped our nation’s art, minds and politics. A place where despite our everyday struggles, we let the music move our hips and legs,” says activist @ramon.contreras1 (Ramon Contreras). In high school, after losing a friend to gun violence, Ramon founded @youthoverguns and today is a prominent voice in the gun safety movement, primarily in Black and Latinx communities. “Growing up Afro-Latino has heavily influenced my activism,” says Ramon. “Everything I am… my principles, my beliefs, are all rooted in my heritage and where I grew up.” This #LatinxHeritageMonth, we’re featuring young activists who are changing the world and doing it #PaMiGente.
