Call out all you who are weary, who are thirsty. Come to the river of God and he will satisfy you. He will give you cause to cry out in fullness of joy for he is joy. A river is an abundant wealth for that which it impacts: the ecosystem, people, economies, resources, etc. The city of Jerusalem, the city in context, does not have any major rivers nearby. When the psalmist writes that the city of God will have a mighty river, he has the future in mind. A future of the coming kingdom, one that is perfect and glorious. The prophets spoke of a mighty river flowing right out of the temple. This river would be life giving, ever growing, an image of God’s love and mercy. Everything in the Bible connects: as Paul explained in 1 Corinthians, our bodies our not our own, they are a temple for the Most High.
