These pods were thought to be “piloted” by a single leader, but that’s not true. Furthermore, pilot whales are actually dolphins. The chunky section just in front of their tail is the caudal peduncle. In this video, that area is tall and packed full of muscle, allowing them to dive fast and deep to reach their squid prey.
