Photo by bertiegregory | Happy World Lion Day! A lion pride takes a snooze in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Lions sleep a lot. In fact, they spend most of their time just hanging out. It’s easy to interpret this as laziness, but it’s actually very smart. If you live in a prey-rich environment, it pays to stay still and let the food come to you. There’s an added bonus: Because you’re still and quiet, you have the element of surprise. This is, of course, assuming you can wake up in time! I’m always staggered by a lion’s ability to go from fast asleep to full hunt mode in seconds.
