Photos by Pete McBride pedromcbride | Water Pressure: The Colorado River Basin continues to get thirstier, forcing adaptation whether we like it or not. The megadrought is requiring the seven states along this key lifeline to make drastic cuts in an effort to conserve four million acre-feet of water for next year, about one-third of the river's annual flow. Most of those steep cuts will need to come from agriculture and the lower basin states, which use more water than they are allocated. I’ve documented the Colorado from source to sea over the course of a decade, and I'm still amazed that we ran the river dry—it no longer reaches the sea—and that few realize how precious and scarce this lifeline is.
