Video by joelsartore | A spoon-billed sandpiper wwtslimbridge in Gloucestershire, U.K., is the 13,000th species to be added to the Photo Ark. This is one of the remaining birds from a captive-rearing project undertaken as part of a wider work to save this critically endangered species. With the population of spoon-billed sandpipers plummeting, mainly due to habitat loss, the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust took a lead role in efforts to buy time to reverse this trend. This included a conservation breeding project at WWT headquarters in Slimbridge, England, where significant advances were made in incubation and rearing methods. These methods have since been used in many other species recovery projects. The spoon-billed sandpiper is a flagship species for the conservation of vital wetlands for migratory waterbirds along the East Asian–Australasian flyway, which stretches from the far north of Russia down to New Zealand.
