Video by joelsartore | Raccoons, like this crab-eating raccoon at elparquedelasleyendas in Lima, Peru, have some of the most nimble hands seen in nature. In fact, this species was actually named for its skillful paws, with “raccoon” coming from the Powhatan word “aroughcun” (when translated, this means “animal that scratches with its hands”). While most animals rely on sight, scent, or sound to hunt, these mammals depend on their sense of touch to locate food. To heighten this sense, raccoons will do something called dousing, in which they wet their paws to stimulate nerve endings.
