It’s not just the void that would be left if their irreplaceable ecological role were to go unfulfilled. It’s also just how much poorer our natural world would be in their absence. Their extraordinary intelligence, their memory, their deep sense of family and empathy, their ability to behave and communicate with each other in so many complex ways—elephants enrich our world in ways that we are only beginning to understand and appreciate.
