Photo by ajistyawan | Last September in Central Java, Indonesia, Timbulsloko villagers in Demak Regency marked the locations of graves with bamboo sticks as part of the process of raising a cemetery by about five feet. They wanted to preserve their connection to the past and the sweet memories of their ancestors for a little while longer. The villagers live with seawater and are surrounded by it, even inside their homes. When they die, they are buried in the land, below sea level. I live just a few miles from the flood-prone villages, which face rising sea levels and land subsidence.
