The north coast of Java is sinking, and the sea is rising. While global warming is raising sea levels worldwide by around an eighth of an inch a year, the land here is sinking as much as four inches. People try as hard as they can to keep their land and their history above water. I live just a few miles from the flood-prone villages, which face rising sea levels and land subsidence.
