Photographer Ami Vitale follows a baby elephant at mealtime, at northern Kenya's Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Orphaned after his mother died from falling into a ditch, Meibae has lived at the sanctuary for four years. Half-gallon (2 liter) bottles of special formula are given every three hours around the clock—and drinking is a noisy, slurpy affair. Reteti is the first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa, where orphans learn to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds.
