Photo by acacia.johnson | A Pacific walrus surfaces off the shore of Round Island in Alaska's Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary. For millennia, this remote isle in Bristol Bay has been a favored summer resting place—known as a haul-out—for Pacific walruses. Since 1985, a state-run permit program has allowed small numbers of visitors to camp on the island each summer.
