Photo by paulnicklen | There are many ways to describe a whale’s breach: tail, chin, back flop, and side, to name a few. Then there is my favorite of all, the spinning breach. At the Silver Bank, north of the Dominican Republic, an 80,000-pound (35,000 kg) humpback whale erupts from the sea, twisting its 45-foot (15 m) body like a corkscrew as it heads for the sky, while the wind peels hundreds of gallons of water from its 15-foot (5 m) pectoral fins. It is an impressive sight to behold. Follow me paulnicklen to see more great leviathans of the deep.
