Photo by acacia.johnson | Still pale in color from immersion in the cold Bering Sea, a male Pacific walrus comes ashore to rest on Round Island, Alaska. Walruses are highly social animals, preferring to be in close physical contact with one another on shore. As this walrus warms up, the color of his skin will visibly redden as blood flows to his extremities. Check out the April edition of National Geographic magazine to read about my experience camping on Round Island last summer to see walruses in the wild.
