My first natgeo story retraced the first African air passage, in 1920—we flew an exact replica 1919 Vickers Vimy across the length of Africa. Our top speed was 65 mph (stall speed: 60), and it couldn’t fly on one engine, so this twin had twice the chance of engine failure. In 1920, the brave pilots that pioneered this historic route crashed twice. In 1999, we crashed once. It took them 43 days.
