It's a day to raise awareness about the importance of all types of forests, and it's an appropriate day to honor one courageous woman. Julia Butterfly Hill was among a group of rotating tree sitters in old-growth redwoods. In 1997, she ascended a thousand-year-old, 180-foot-tall redwood in Humboldt County, California, with the intention of spending one week at the top, a method used by environmental activists to prevent these trees from being felled. Julia ended up not touching terra firma again for a remarkable 738 days. She came to call the tree Luna, its name to this day. I had the honor of climbing Luna twice.
