The whirling waves illuminated by bright lights behind me on Oregon's Seaside Beach created this pattern of otherworldly beauty. Ultimately this one fell to the cutting-room floor when we created the final magazine layout—the power and purpose of an image in a National Geographic article is storytelling, not just one's favorite images.
