I used this knowledge to my advantage by laying motionless in the icy water, confident that one would eventually stop by to investigate. It worked brilliantly—until this particular bird jumped on my back and began using its heavy bill as a battering ram in an attempt to crack open my skull and access the juicy meat inside. I somehow captured this image despite the blows—and the fits of laughter that gripped me.
