Photo by Pete McBride pedromcbride | Using a wide range of clicks, whistles, whines, and sonar, a pod of orca feed on a school of herring in the Arctic waters off northern Norway during the polar night, when the sun never rises above the horizon. I was there during the lockdown period of the pandemic, and experts were hearing more sounds from the orca populations—not louder but "more excited." Some speculated that it related to the level of quiet that permeated not just shoreline but below the water's surface, as shipping lanes were far less busy.
