Photos by Michael Yamashita yamashitaphoto | North Korea began the New Year with ballistic missile tests, including at least one this week it claims was a hypersonic missile, amid an intensifying race for the next generation of long-range weapons that are harder to detect and intercept. For 70 years now the Korean War has been ongoing. Though an armistice agreement was signed in the summer of 1953, ending the fighting, the war itself technically never ended. There are still over 28,000 American soldiers stationed in Korea today. Here’s a look back at my natgeo story, published in 2003, "Divided Korea: Face-Off Along the DMZ." Within the demilitarized zone (DMZ), the border barrier between the north and south, training is a constant for for the U.S. and Korean soldiers who are stationed there on highest alert. #dmz #Korea #Koreanwar #soldiers
