This remote spot in the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary is an important summer place for male walruses, which gather by the thousands to recuperate after the mating season. One of my favorite parts of watching walruses is seeing how they regulate their body heat through their skin. The walrus in the foreground, paler in color, has recently returned from feeding in the cold waters of the Bering Sea. As he warms up onshore, he'll turn the same reddish-pink color as the others—a result of blood flowing to his extremities to cool him down.
