Photo by lynseyaddario | Fires burn in the Amazon on Indigenous Kayapo land in Brazil's Para state, in September. Deforestation continues at extraordinary rates across the Amazon, led by land-clearing for meat producers and cattle ranchers along with illegal mining. The most common means of deforestation is by fire; ranchers burn the land in order to create space for farms and grazing cattle. Roughly one-quarter of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed since the 1960s, which means it can no longer absorb as much of the world's carbon emissions as it once did—and that accelerates climate change.
