India—and especially Mumbai—is a bodybuilder’s paradise. This is due at least in part to the availability of cheap steroids produced by the local pharmaceutical industry. Bodybuilders easily get a hold of drug cocktails that guarantee hypertrophic muscles. The combination of steroids, growth hormones, painkillers, and insulin—overseen by willing doctors, fellow bodybuilders, or simply internet forums—sometimes leads to death. In the world of sports, these treatments are considered doping and their use is prohibited. But for bodybuilders, big is beautiful, and some engage in excess.
