Photo by irablockphoto | Flamingos take flight near Siniya Island, in the United Arab Emirates. Each year, thousands of flamingos migrate to the UAE to escape the harsh winters of Central Asia. Flamingos were first observed breeding in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in 1993. Later, in 1999, 10 chicks successfully fledged at the reserve. Flamingos are fascinating birds to watch, and they play an important role in the legacy of Abu Dhabi—the reserve is the emirate's first protected area.
