Video by joelsartore / Flying insects like this female horsefly can encounter a number of foreign particles, such as dust and pollen, which threaten to coat the insect's eyes and antennae, limiting their sensing abilities. To ensure their senses aren’t dulled, they will regularly clean their eyes, as you see in the clip. As adults, both male and female horseflies feed on nectar, but in order to reproduce, females need something extra in their diet: blood. To obtain the nutrients she needs, the female horsefly will seek out animals like dogs and horses, and occasionally even people, to act as hosts. After she feeds, the female will take about six days to fully digest the blood before beginning the search for the source of her next meal.
