Photo by amivitale / As the sun comes up, Ruko Community Conservancy Ranger Mike Parkei carries food for eight giraffes that had become stranded on Longicharo Island, a rocky lava pinnacle, in the middle of western Kenya's Lake Baringo. The rising lake levels turned the peninsula into an island, trapping the giraffes. In a dramatic rescue, two were transported across the lake on a makeshift raft to the 44,000-acre (18,000-hectare) conservancy. This move was orchestrated by savegiraffesnow with nrt_kenya and kenyawildlifeservice. As the rescue was prepared, it was the local rangers who cared for the giraffe and made sure they had enough to eat.
