Photos by Danielle Villasana davillasana / While transgender women throughout Latin America face challenges due to transphobia, in Central America they’re further afflicted by the region’s endemic violence. Trans migrants Kataleya Nativi Baca and Alexa Smith fled Honduras as a form of self-preservation, because of threats and physical assaults by gang members and even family. Despite obstacles on their migration journeys, they’re now living in the U.S., waiting to seek asylum. “I'm ready to work hard to achieve my dreams," said Alexa. Currently exhibited photoville in New York City, Kataleya and Alexa’s story is part of a worldwide group project by National Geographic and the Everyday Projects (everydayeverywhere) about women pushed to migrate.
