Photo by renaeffendiphoto / In the stunning Copper Canyon of Sierra Tarahumara, in Mexico's Chihuahua state, I met Maria Lorena Ramirez, an Indigenous Rarámuri long-distance runner and a finalist in a European ultramarathon. Like others in her community, she often runs not in sportswear but in traditional dress and rubber sandals made of car tires. The Tarahumara communities preserve their unique way of life, living in remote settlements often inaccessible by road; running long distances becomes a necessity. They run for hours to deliver messages. They also incorporate competitive running in their cultural rituals and festivities. Rarámuri translates as "those who run fast" from the local language.
