Photo by Karine Aigner kaigner / The corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) is a nonvenomous rat snake species, and one of the most popular reptile pets in the world. While corn snakes can bite, they're quite docile in personality. As constrictors, they strike their prey to gain a hold on it, and then wrap their bodies around it, squeezing out the life. Each individual has its own pattern and color—some more colorful and stunning than others. This one was not a pet. It lay spread out on the tar road in front of my car, soaking in the warmth on an overcast day. Any day meeting a snake is a good day in my world!
