Photo by thomaspeschak / A Kalahari lion chases a South African giraffe through a thicket of thorn bushes magnificently draped in white spring flowers. The lioness was making a solo attempt—and this giraffe escaped without so much as a scratch. Large predators are often the first animals to be lost in the wake of agriculture, ranching, and development, but they were reintroduced by the tswalufoundation in 2001. Today two healthy and growing prides roam the eastern section of the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, exerting an important influence on the movement and behavior of browsers, grazers, and smaller carnivores.
