Photo by thomaspeschak | Moths race across the night sky as a thunderstorm discharges lightning across the arid savanna. More than 220 moth species are found in Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, and some take flight as soon as the first rains soften the soil, releasing adults from their buried cocoons. I struggled with how to bring this unusual scene to life. Finally I decided on five-second exposures to capture the lightning, while my assistant ottowhitehead used a powerful torch to "light paint" the grasses and a camel thorn tree in the foreground. A small head torch positioned right above my lens hood provided the illumination to capture the flight trails. We did this for about an hour until this image popped up on my LCD. At the same time Dylan from the tswalufoundation kept watch so that I would not end up a snack for a curious lion. For more on this story, click the link in our bio.
