Photo lucalocatelliphoto / In the village of Djiffer in central Senegal, home to 5,000 inhabitants, the tide is low and yet the main pier is still submerged—along with many houses. Over the past five years, 300 families have had to abandon their homes due to rising waters. "Since I was born, I have seen sea levels get at least 300 meters [yards] closer to the village,” says Sebastien Ndong, 52, the village leader. "Even the house where I grew up is down there, under the water." Coastal erosion could separate villages, turning them into islands. Currently the loss of coastline is estimated at about three meters [yards] per year.
