Photo by tamaramerino_photography / Located in northern Chile, the Atacama is the driest non-polar desert in the world, which is transformed during the phenomenon known as the desierto florido (flowering desert). About 200 species, many of them endemic, sprout only when conditions are ripe for this particular event. The flowers open toward the sun, dyeing plains and ravines in deep, intense hues. The multicolored carpet dominates the land for days. The seeds lie dormant for years under the soil, until favorable conditions prompt them to germinate and bloom.
