Photo by simonnorfolkstudio / Geographically part of Africa but territorially part of Yemen, Socotra is an archipelago of four islands in the Arabian Sea. As a consequence of its isolation, Socotra has been described as otherworldly—up to one-third of its plant life is endemic. In 2008 Socotra was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites because of this extraordinary natural heritage.
Seen in the foreground of this image, the Socotra desert rose, or bottle tree, is one of the island's endemic plants (Adenium obesum sokotranum). It's highly poisonous and unpalatable for livestock, and despite being widespread on the island, it's considered vulnerable to extinction.
