Territorially part of Yemen but geographically part of Africa, this archipelago of four islands is located in the Gulf of Aden. The largest island, also known as Socotra, lies about 150 miles (240 km) east of the Horn of Africa and 240 miles (380 km) south of the Arabian Peninsula. As a consequence of its isolation, Socotra has been described as otherworldly—up to a third of its plant life is endemic. In 2008 Socotra was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites because of its extraordinary natural heritage.
