Photos by amivitale / In breaking news, three more northern white rhino embryos have been created by biorescue_project, the team of scientists and conservationists working to save the species from extinction. Najin and Fatu are the two last northern white rhinos alive on the planet and live at olpejeta Conservancy in northern Kenya. This brings the total to 12 embryos. These pure northern white rhino embryos are currently awaiting implantation in southern white rhino surrogates. Seventeen eggs were airlifted to Avantea laboratory in Italy to be fertilized and cryopreserved. Scientists were also able to fertilize one egg with sperm from Angalifu, a male northern white rhino who died in 2014. The breakthrough is significant in that it draws in the genetics of an unrelated individual to the cryopreserved population.
