On this particular assignment for NatGeo, we spent 90 days searching British Columbia's rugged shoreline for signs of coastal wolves—an elusive community that feeds almost exclusively from the ocean. On eighty of those, we huddled in blinds as their tantalizing howls carried over the water; on eight, we caught fleeting glimpses of them in the distance; and on just four, we got close enough to capture images. Sometimes a single photo requires an investment of hundreds of hours of trekking, tracking, and trying again and again to get it right, but the effort is always worth it.
