Photo by irablockphoto / A cameleer leads his Bactrians in the Gobi desert of southern Mongolia. With their distinctive two humps, Bactrian camels are found mainly in Central and East Asia. They've adapted to the region's extreme weather: In the -20°F (-29°C) harsh winters of Mongolia, they develop a thick, shaggy protective coat; in summer, they shed the coat and rarely sweat, thereby helping them to conserve fluids in the over 100°F (38°C) temperatures. Like Arabian camels, they don't need much water to survive. Bactrian camels were instrumental in carrying goods over the Silk Road from the 2nd century BCE to the 18th century.
