Video by joelsartore / Like other species of turtle, the sex of the Florida box turtle is temperature dependent. Nests that are between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius tend to produce males, while nests over 28 degrees Celsius produce females. Hatchlings are well developed at birth, growing at a rate of about 1.5 centimeters per year for the first five years until they reach sexual maturity.
