Photo by amivitale / Asiwa, a Rothschild’s (Nubian) giraffe, is rescued from Longicharo Island in the middle of western Kenya's Lake Baringo. Longicharo had once been a peninsula, but rising flood waters turned it into an island, trapping a group of giraffes. In a dramatic rescue orchestrated by the local community and conservationists from savegiraffesnow, nrt_kenya, and kenyawildlifeservice, two were transported on a makeshift raft to the Ruko Community Conservancy. The conservancy was founded in 2006 by two communities who had previously been warring. The plan was to make the giraffe a symbol of unity and peace to end their long-standing conflict.
