Photo by Pete McBride pedromcbride / This coal-fired power plant near the Grand Canyon was dismantled at the end of 2020. It was the largest coal plant in the western U.S. for decades, and it even made the cover of natgeo in the '80s for a story about clean air. When the plant owners decided shutting it down would be the most economical decision, this station had provided the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe with revenue for over 40 years and had more than 500 employees—90% of whom were Navajo. Its closure raises the question of what role cleaner energy can play in replacing plants like this one—hopefully providing jobs and helping our environment at the same time.
